Special Guest
Elisabeth Walker
We are very pleased to have Elisabeth Walker joining us to share their expertise from their long and illustrious years of teaching the Alexander Technique.
She will we be giving a Plenary Session on Wednesday 10 August from 11:00 to 12:15 in the Congress Main Hall.
Elisabeth Walker born 1914 in Cambridgeshire, trained in 1935 as a radiographer and worked with Graham Hodgson in London with whom she X-rayed Royalty and many celebrities of the day. She later worked at King’s College Hospital and at the hospital of St. John & St. Elizabeth.
She had her first lesson with F.M.Alexander in 1937 and started training with him in 1938. That same year she married Dick Walker and together they completed their training with F.M. Alexander in 1947. In January 1949 Elisabeth and Dick emigrated to South Africa to teach there as Irene Tasker was returning to England. After eleven years teaching and raising their family, they too returned to England where they taught privately as well as at the New College of Speech and Drama.
In 1985 they started the Alexander Teacher Training Course, Oxford, where they were able to develop even further their understanding of the technique and their attitude of continual curiosity and learning.
Since 1992 Elisabeth has also given workshops and Master Classes in Switzerland, Germany, France, Holland, Israel, Australia, New Zealand, Japan and the U.S.A. She has contributed to seven of the International Congresses.
Her years of experience have given Elisabeth a deep confidence in the value of Alexander’s principles and in conveying these principles simply and directly to whoever she is teaching. Her Autobiography “Forward and Away” was published in 2008. Central to Elisabeth’s teaching is respect for each person’s individuality and a lively interest in practical and artistic activities.
Two of Elisabeth’s five children are Alexander teachers.
