Short Stories from the Heart ( 1½ hr )
Mon, 8 Aug - 20:00 to 21:30 - Congress Center, CC A
Being masters of Inhibition, Alexander teachers are always storytelling in their professional lives. Tonight we hear stories from a handful of teachers, which may have nothing to do with their teaching lives, but everything to do with what made them the people they are.
These stories may be funny, sad, ordinary or extraordinary. The only quality that defines them is that they are absolutely true.

Gitte D. Fjordbo
When conscious control is NOT an option.. & the "right thing" does NOT do itself. ( 1 hr )
Tue, 9 Aug - 17:15 to 18:15 - Congress Center, CC A
How does a compromised nervous-system influence the development of our habitual patterns of use of ourselves. How will it impact our possibility of learning the Alexander technique and vice versa: How will the Alexander technique impact our compromised nervous-system?!
Gitte will also be giving an afternoon workshop to further explore, and experience through practical work, the contents of the above lecture.
There will be time for questions and comments coming out of the Lecture.
That workshop is titled “Essential Presence in Touch(TM) – allowing a Space of De-rotation”.
Gitte D. Fjordbo's interdisciplinary background and training is traditional as well as complimentary. She began her personal and professional journey in the field of Rehabilitation at the age of 18 following a serious car accident. She received her MA degree from the University of Copenhagen (1982-94) with a double major in Audiologopedics and the Alexander Technique, the first of its kind in the world. She wrote two theses for this: "On the Development of Habit – from the viewpoint of the Alexander Technique and early neuromotor patterns of development" and "Why w e have to Crawl... - On Human Development; motor and communicative skills – aberrations and inter-connections". She was certified as a teacher of the Technique from the Constructive Teaching Centre, London, in 1992. She has worked in the field of Transpersonal Psychology since 1989, extensively with transpersonal psychologist, Ruth White, with whom she is currently writing a book. The field of Energy Medicine has been an interest and a part of her work for many years. Gitte is a trained and well-practised Neuro-developmental Therapist (ad modum INPP, Chester, the U.K.) and a practitioner of Johansen Individualized Auditory Stimulation (JIAS). She is certified as a Philosophical Counsellor from the Philosophical Counselling Institute, B.C., Canada and a certified Practitioner of Somatic Experiencing (shock-trauma-therapy).
Gifted with many insights into the field of human potential, Gitte's work is expansive. In true transpersonal style hers is an approach of 'and-and-and...' – rather than 'and-or..'. She currently lives in Denmark with her lovely companion and playmate, the yellow Labrador, Molly.

11:00 to 12:15 // CC A
Elisabeth Walker

Wed, 10 Aug - 11:00 to 12:15 - Congress Center, CC A ( 1¼ hr )
We are very pleased to have Elisabeth Walker joining us to share their expertise from their long and illustrious years of teaching the Alexander Technique.Elisabeth Walker born 1914 in Cambridgeshire, trained in 1935 as a radiographer and worked with Graham Hodgson in London with whom she X-rayed Royalty and many celebrities of the day. She later worked at King’s College Hospital and at the hospital of St. John & St. Elizabeth.
She had her first lesson with F.M.Alexander in 1937 and started training with him in 1938. That same year she married Dick Walker and together they completed their training with F.M. Alexander in 1947. In January 1949 Elisabeth and Dick emigrated to South Africa to teach there as Irene Tasker was returning to England. After eleven years teaching and raising their family, they too returned to England where they taught privately as well as at the New College of Speech and Drama.
In 1985 they started the Alexander Teacher Training Course, Oxford, where they were able to develop even further their understanding of the technique and their attitude of continual curiosity and learning.
Since 1992 Elisabeth has also given workshops and Master Classes in Switzerland, Germany, France, Holland, Israel, Australia, New Zealand, Japan and the U.S.A. She has contributed to seven of the International Congresses.
Her years of experience have given Elisabeth a deep confidence in the value of Alexander’s principles and in conveying these principles simply and directly to whoever she is teaching. Her Autobiography “Forward and Away” was published in 2008. Central to Elisabeth’s teaching is respect for each person’s individuality and a lively interest in practical and artistic activities.
Two of Elisabeth’s five children are Alexander teachers.

Sensory motor control of togetherness:
Ensemble timing
and posture and balance ( 1¼ hr )
Thurs, 9 Aug - 11:00 to 12:15 - Congress Center, CC A
I will describe two lines of current research in my lab. The first is concerned with the high quality of synchronisation in music ensemble performance. I will describe an experiment in which a leading classical string quartet repeatedly played two short Haydn excerpts with intentional, but unrehearsed, expressive variations in timing. Time series analysis revealed temporal adjustments within the various duo combinations in the quartet that differed from pair to pair. Contrasting patterns of timing corrections, between first and second violins, on the one hand, and viola and cello, on the other, were consistent with roles commonly assigned to different instruments in chamber music ensembles. This work suggests time series analysis offers a promising method for objectively characterising timing in music ensemble.
The second line of lab research that I will present is on the contribution of light touch, in which gentle finger tip contact with an environmental fixed surface reduces body sway in standing. Forces at contact are too small to provide direct mechanical support and so are assumed to contribute cues to the control of balance. In light touch assisted balance, the reference surface need not be rigidly fixed to reduce sway. I will describe an experiment in which a moving reference, provided by touching another person reduced sway, even though that person was also swaying. In such interpersonal light touch, information about contact surface movements is used to control tracking of the surface by the hand. At the same time the information is also used to control body sway more efficiently than if there were no contact.

The Embodied Mind ( 1 hr )
Thurs, 11 Aug - 17:15 to 18:15 - Congress Center, CC A
Rachel will present an innovative model for an experiment consisting of 5-10 AT teachers and a "hand-picked" group of 10 leading edge neuroscientists, philosophers of mind, psychologists, and robotic engineers who explore the "Embodied Mind".
This initial experiment has been sponsored and partially funded by the CREA Laboratory at Ecole Polytechnique (the 'MIT' of France) and is planned for a weekend in late Fall. The goal of this experiment is to introduce the group to the particularly subtle methods of training AT teachers, and to invite them to have the actual hands-on experience. The group will explore the principles underlying the definitions of AT teaching using their own theoretical, methodological, and experiential perspectives. Such an exchange will open the AT to a professional dialogue pivotal to supporting the AT's future in the world at large.

Fri, 12 Aug - 17:15 to 18:15 - Congress Center, CC A
This presentation will look at the interaction of the inputs from the proprioceptive, vestibular, and visual systems in the development of upright postural orientation. It will also consider how the Alexander Technique can optimize our ability to maintain good orientation as we age. Michael Gleeson has a background in Physiotherapy and the Alexander Technique, and a special interest in the dynamics of postural orientation. He is currently doing a Research Degree through the School of Public Health at Sydney University looking at whether the Alexander Technique can improve balance and mobility in older adults with vision impairments.
