Selma Gokcen & Farshideh Bondarenko

The missing link

Farshideh Bondarenko (Dip physio; MSCP; SRP with special interest in neurology) is a London-based neurophysiotherapist practising a form of physiotherapy which addresses movement in neurologically compromised individuals suffering from conditions such as cerebral palsy, muscular dystrophy, and damage to the central nervous system resulting from accidents or birth trauma. For fifteen years, Miss Bondarenko was resident at the National Hospital for Neurological Disorder; Chyne Hospital for Cerebral Palsy Children; and Great Ormond Street Hospital, where she specialized in hip dysplasia before establishing a private practice in West Ealing.

After completion of her Alexander Technique training, Selma Gokcen consulted Farshideh Bondarenko for a stubborn and apparently irremediable weakness in standing on her left leg. Neither the Alexander Technique nor myriad specialists in the fields of educational kinesiology, cranial osteopathy, orthopaedic surgery, and neurology were able to help her to resolve this difficulty.

The story of her complete recovery may be of interest to teachers wishing to enlarge their understanding of movement and to gain insight into conditions which the Alexander Technique does not appear to ameliorate.

Selma Gokcen, a graduate of the Juilliard School, is a performing cellist and teacher of the Alexander Technique. She is a member of the faculty of the Guildhall School of Music and Drama in London and maintains a private studio for musicians and the Alexander Technique.
