The Pilates Method: Freeing and Stimulating the Core

We will begin by discussing principles of efficient movement to help us rethink commonly held beliefs about physical training. We will move lightly and easily through a series of movement exercises to warm up and stimulate our core.
Working in pairs, we will work with each other to apply the Alexander Technique principles to basic Pilates movements, including the abdominal curl(spinal flexion) the cobra/swan (spinal extension), and trunk stabilization. We will learn how the deep abdominals and psoas can be accessed with ease, and how this heightens the primary control.
If time permits, we will look at any exercise that the participants would like assistance with.

Susan Sinclair has been teaching the Pilates Method for 20 years, and the Alexander Technique for 15 years. She is the director of the Alexander Alliance Toronto Teacher Training Program, as well as training Pilates teachers for 14 years. She teaches both the Alexander Technique and the Pilates Method in her fully equipped Pilates studio in Toronto. Susan is informed by years of training in modern dance, contact improvisation, aerial dance, tai chi, and aikido.
