Constructive Conscious Control of the Individual: A serious idea whose time is coming or an irrelevance today?
An exploratory talk / workshop which will examine participants’ understanding of Alexander’s thought in the light of their own experience and thinking. The workshop will introduce the notion of ‘action sets’ as a heuristic device for modelling not just our own experience, but the experience of those around us. Action sets are grounded in the work of F M Alexander and George Kelly, the originator of Personal Construct Psychology (PCP), and arose from a dialogue between my ongoing commitments as an Alexander teacher and as a Personal Construct psychotherapist.
Richard Casebow has been teaching in private practice in Edinburgh since he established the Edinburgh Alexander Centre in 1994. As well as teaching private lessons, he also runs regular introductory workshops, and offers talks and demonstrations to larger groups and organisations. In 2003, he helped to organise the STAT annual conference which was held in Scotland.
Richard is also a UKCP registered psychotherapist, having completed the Personal Construct Psychology (PCP) diploma course in 2007. His dissertation focused on the dialogue between the Alexander Technique and Personal Construct Psychology, and introduced the idea of ‘action sets’ which can be used by both teacher and therapist to explore the meaning worlds of pupils and clients.
Richard studied Philosophy for his first degree, and maintains a keen interest in this field, integrating it into his work as a teacher and therapist. He also enjoys hill walking, swimming, running, cooking, and opera.
