Psychophysical Integration

Just as we grow our bodies, we grow our minds and the two, as we know, are deeply interrelated. The stages of development of the psyche are well researched and documented. My thesis is that these stages correlate or resonate with different areas of the spine and that we can trace our psychological growth from the coccyx through to the crown of the head. Ancient wisdom traditions knew this and hence we have the chakras, which are now being researched scientifically. The chakras are located in the spine, the central axis of the body, and central to the process of lengthening and widening. With energy flowing well in the chakras the spine lengthens fluidly, significantly improving our use. One of the ways this natural flow is blocked is through different habitual psychological states associated with each chakra. In this workshop we will learn about these different states theoretically and experientially, working on ourselves, working with hands-on, and using other exploratory exercises. When we understand the psychological patterns as well as the physical patterns that disturb our natural good use, we are in a much stronger position to create positive change and psychophysical integration.

Glen Park worked in the Professional Theatre as actor, writer and director, before training as an Alexander Teacher. She has taught the Alexander Technique for over twenty-five years, running workshops in several countries, and writing a very successful book, ‘The Art of Changing’. She now calls her work Psychophysical Integration, as she has developed the principals of the Alexander Technique to include emotional holding patterns, and to support integrity in the body, mind, emotions and spirit. Glen lives in Devon with her teenage twin sons.
