Alan Philps

Voice - No Tears and Tiaras

This is an entirely practical workshop. It aims to get participants to look at how we use the voice in everyday life and how that can be taken into any other aspect of vocal art form from a practical starting point.

Alan Philps was born and brought up in Australia and won a scholarship to NIDA in Sydney.

He came to England in 1976 to study voice work with Florence Norberg, whose individual and practical approach to the voice left no doubt for misunderstanding or misuse. Alan continued working with her for eight and a half years untill her death in 1984, during which time he performed in operas and concerts etc.

Alan met Walter Carrington in 1977. After initial lessons he realized the close connection between the Alexander Technique and the voice. This has been the primary and continuing influence on his work in England. When Alan finished his training, Walter and Dilys Carrington asked him to continue and expand on the voice work at the CTC as they felt this was an important and integral part of the work.
