Decisions, Decisions, Decisions!

All day long we make decisions. Yet, are we aware of how we make decisions? F.M. Alexander developed his decision making process and applied it to the individual. What if there were a group decision making process that applied his principles to a group as if it were one body? One Alexander Technique society has been experimenting with a decision making system that applies the principles of the Alexander Technique to the group decision making process. This system is called Formal Consensus, developed by C.T. Butler.

Like the Alexander Technique, Formal Consensus is an indirect procedure that asks us to inhibit the habitual responses we make at meetings, to consciously and constructively direct ourselves, and to pay attention to the quality of the means we use. It is a constructive way of resolving issues that listens to every voice and produces a decision that accurately reflects the desires of all members of the group.

In this very interactive workshop, you will learn the steps in the Formal Consensus process, and using these steps, you will see how to apply principles of the Alexander Technique to making decisions as a group. Please join us for an engaging, entertaining and powerful paradigm-shifting experience. At the end of this workshop, you will have insights into the value of using consensus in organizations, in couples, and even for one person.

Catherine Kettrick, Ph.D., began studying the Alexander Technique with
Marjorie Barstow in 1973.  She has taught the Technique in the US, Europe
and Australia, and is a co-founder of The Performance School and Alexander
Technique International.  In 1994 she began studying Formal Consensus and
has created workshops in Formal Consensus for sign language interpreters,
midwives, park board members and AT teachers.  She is fascinated with how
the principles of the Alexander Technique support and enliven decision
making and conflict resolution.

Diana Bradley, M.Ed., certified Alexander Technique teacher since 1979, completed a 13-year apprenticeship with Marjorie Barstow. She was a modern dancer for 10 years and has 16 years of training in Aikido (3rd degree black belt). A founding member of Alexander Technique International, she served as chair of the Agenda Planning Committee for several years, and gained a deep understanding and appreciation of Formal Consensus. She is the director of Alexander in the Caribbean, a 5-day workshop in St. Thomas, USVI.
